Which Thickness of SPC Hybrid is Right for Me?

SPC Hybrid Vinyl Plank Flooring comes in a range of thicknesses from 2mm to 8.5mm+. When selecting SPC Hybrid Flooring, you will need to consider a few factors to determine which one is right for you.

There are a few things to remember when deciding on SPC Hybrid flooring thickness. Will there be a lot of foot traffic in this location? What is the type of subfloor? Is the subfloor in good condition?

A thicker SPC Hybrid flooring feels more stable and comfortable underfoot. If you want to refresh the look of your low-traffic bedroom, a thin SPC Hybrid plank flooring will do the trick. Choose a thicker floor for high traffic areas, such as family rooms, dining/living areas and hallways.

Another significant consideration is the wear layer. What is the wear layer? It is the protective coating on top of the plank. It is designed to protect the floor against scratches, stains, scuff marks and general wear and tear. The wear layer keeps the floor looking in its original state, giving the floor a maintenance free finish. The wear layer signifies durability, which is why this is another key factor to consider. As with the thickness of your SPC, the floor will be more durable with a thicker wear layer.

Subfloor also plays a significant role in choosing the thickness. If your subfloor is hardwood, consider a thicker SPC Hybrid, as this will give you more support and stability. If your subfloor is level, a thinner SPC will be suffice.

A thicker SPC Hybrid floor may provide more support and sturdiness if you are installing in a high-traffic area. A thicker SPC Hybrid floor is also more forgiving of subfloors with imperfections. If you are concerned about your subfloor, choose a thicker floor, however we always recommend installing a new floor on a clean, dry, and even subfloor. This is best practice and will help to avoid any issues further down the track.

SPC Hybrid Vinyl Plank floors may require an IXPE moisture barrier or underlay, especially if you are placing it over a concrete subfloor. Using this material will prevent any moisture from the subfloor leaking into your floor. The IXPE underlay also provides acoustic/soundproof qualities, therefore is a requirement when installing in strata buildings.
